Dominican Republic Expat and Travel ArticlesMuseum of the Dominican Man (Museo del Hombre Dominicano)
The Plaza de la Cultura is the focal point of any trip to Santo Domingo. This historic square is surrounded by numerous government offices and other cultural destinations that are on top of the list of any trip to the Dominican Republic. One of the structures that you have to check out is the Museum of the Dominican Man.
The Museum, called the Museo del Hombre Dominicano in Spanish, seeks to preserve Dominican history and culture by introducing artifacts derived from the history of the Dominican people. This includes prehistoric artifacts, items from the Dominican Republic's colonial past, and other items that have their roots in the slave trade. Among the centerpiece artifacts in the museum are those that exhibit the lives of the Tamno natives, who occupied Hispaniola way before the Spaniards came to the land. These natives cohabited with other tribes that lives there. The museum allows visitors to look more closely at this history through conserved ceremonial artifacts, masks, and other items that survived the European expansion period. Aside from the exhibition rooms, there are also a number of private halls that hosts various events. This includes a 1,120-square meter exhibition hall and an 80-seat conference room. The exhibition hall serves as a venue for budding artists to show off their work related to Dominican history, as well as a venue for other artifacts that are on loan to the museum. For those interested, the museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM. It may well be the best museum in the Plaza, located around the Maximo Gomez Ave., Bolivar, and Cesar Nicolas Penson Sts. Visiting a museum is not exactly on top of everyone's mind when they visit the Dominican Republic, but I personally believe it is a must (and get a tour guide, too, if you don't know how to speak Spanish) for anyone to visit this particular museum as it speaks a lot about the history of this great country. You can talk about...
