The Dominican Republic heritage bears strong Spanish and French influences, which reflect in their social beliefs and lifestyles. Culturally stable with an affinity to arts, there now are more nationals who speak Spanish than any other language. Affluent etiquette and hospitality; a strong social bonding characterizes its citizens.

Traveling around is convenient and can be accomplished without denting one’s pockets considerably. There are many interesting places to see, specifically the fine art schools and the music academies. One such place, the ‘Zona Colonial’ in the capital city of Santo Domingo is not one to be missed.

After a busy day of seeing the graceful Zona Colonial in Santo Domingo; one can choose to dine in any of the rich palette of restaurants and hotels the city has to offer. Dining out is quite popular; and is usually a family affair with all members of the family present. ‘La Bandera’; a national favorite is often the meal of choice followed by ‘Sancocho’. Most meals combine vegetables with stewed meat, sometimes rice and are prepared to the highest standard. It certainly is an enjoyable fare for foreign tourists and locals alike.

Being a speedily growing economy is not without its share of problems. Poverty and unemployment in most areas poses a dire challenge for the government. The tourism industry in the nation actively benefits from the stable economy and is one of the largest means of foreign revenue. Besides tourism, agriculture, construction and mining form other major industries. The nation also harbors a very active folk art scene; with locals as well as immigrants engage full-time in oil painting activities which are sold to tourists for a living.

There is never a dull moment when you have the Dominican Republic on your agenda; a truly cheerful Latin American destination offering a good combination of food, sightseeing and lifestyle.
