Watching Humpback Whales at Samana Bay

Thank author of this post/comment

Recently, I discovered that I am not really too enthusiastic about zoos anymore. I just can't find myself to derive happiness from seeing animals in captivity especially when they appear inside very poorly maintained locations. I just can't be happy about that. I prefer seeing animals in their natural habitat anytime. Fortunately, there are a lot of those in the Dominican Republic. Let's start off with Samana.

Samana, officially known as Santa Barbara de Samana, is a heaven for any nature lover. Every year, thousands of humpback whales go to Samana Bay for the breeding season, wherein the females give birth and mate for the next year. The humpback season in Samana lasts from January to March. Before this time, the humpback whales travel from the polar regions down to the Samana Bay and the rest of the Caribbean to avoid the harsh winter in the north.

Humpback population in the past used to be very large, but this drastically declined after heartless hunters killed these humpback whales for various reasons. Fortunately, conservation efforts are already established in order to protect these magnificent creatures from total extinction. Now you can see at least 300 of them at any given time during the mating season.

Humpbacks are not too shy about their activities and they are pretty much easy to observe when you are in the areas of the Samana Bay where they mate and breed. It's always fun to see the humpbacks in action and listen as they call out their mating songs. It is very fortunate for the Dominican Republic to play host to these fascinating creatures, which is why the national government is pretty strict when it comes to the preservation of humpback whales.

Other than humpback whale watching, other activities that you can enjoy while you are here includes horseback riding, swimming, snorkeling, and diving. Exploring the rainforests around the area is also one good way to enjoy your stay here. Whale watching is the most popular activity in the Samana Bay, however.
