Indoor volleyball may not be as popular as a lot of sports out there, but I assure you that this sport has its own kind of thrill that can get anyone hooked to any game at any point in time. When the rallies become longer and when you see both teams pushing hard to earn a single point in a set that seems to take forever, you will know what I am talking about.

Baseball is the most popular sport in the Dominican Republic, but it can definitely put a stand when it comes to this game. To prove this point, the country has recently defeated hosts Puerto Rico in a five-set battle during XXI Central American and Caribbean Games. By defeating the hosts, the Dominican Republic team was able to get its fifth women's volleyball gold medal in this quadrennial event. It also won the top place in the 1946, 1962, 2002, and 2006 editions. This makes the country's women's volleyball team the best in the region for the last 12 years.

But more than just the glory of winning the women's volleyball tittle in Central America and the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic (and Puerto Rico, actually) will be using this experience to spearhead its campaign in the FIVB World Grand Prix, which will be held in August this year. Both the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico will be participating in volleyball's most prestigious international tournament as representatives of the Americas. In total, 12 countries will be competing in this competition.

At this stage, the Dominican Republic hasn't had much success. This game is pretty much dominated by Brazil, occasionally being tripped by some other nation. That said, it's still good to see the country competing at this level. It just shows how competitive the national team is when it comes to the sport. I hope the day comes when we see the Dominican Republic emerge to become the next world champions.
